Answer Engine Optimization · AEO & GEO

Get your brand cited by AI search.

More people are getting their answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews without ever clicking a link. Answer engine optimization is the work of making sure that when AI answers a question in your space, it's your business it names — accurately, and as the source it trusts. I help brands earn those citations.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring and positioning your content so AI answer engines — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the rest — can understand it, trust it, and cite it directly in their answers. The goal shifts from the old prize of a click to a newer one: being the source the machine quotes when someone asks a question in your field.

It's a real change in what you're optimizing for. Traditional search rewards a page that ranks and earns the click. An answer engine often resolves the question on the spot, names a few sources, and sends no one anywhere. If your business isn't among the names, you're invisible in that conversation — no matter how well you rank in the blue links underneath. AEO is how you stay in the answer. If you're new to it, start with the plain-English explainer.

How it's different

AEO, SEO, and GEO — what actually changes.

AEO isn't a replacement for SEO; it's the next layer on top of it. SEO earns you the ranking and the authority that make you quotable in the first place. AEO shapes that authority into something an answer engine can lift cleanly into a response. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the same idea aimed specifically at generative models. You need the foundation either way — the new work is making your facts easy to extract and trust.

The short version: SEO wins the click, AEO wins the citation, and GEO is the generative-search slice of the same job.

Why it matters now

The answer is the new front page.

Two things make this worth your attention now rather than later. First, the behavior is already mainstream — a large and growing share of searches end in an AI answer, and that share is climbing every quarter. Second, the traffic that does come through AI tends to convert well, because someone who acts on a recommended source has already been pre-sold by a system they trust. Being named in that answer is high-quality real estate.

The flip side is the risk. If an answer engine doesn't have a clear, trustworthy read on your business, it will either skip you or — worse — describe you wrong, confidently, to a customer who never double-checks. AEO is partly offense, getting cited, and partly defense, making sure the version of you the AI repeats is accurate. Here's how to measure where you stand today.

The playbook

How you actually get cited.

There's no magic switch, but the levers are knowable. Answer engines reward content that is easy to extract, clearly attributed, and corroborated elsewhere on the web. These are the pieces I work on, in roughly this order.

The structured-data piece deserves a note: clean markup is one of the strongest levers here, because it states your facts in a format machines don't have to interpret. It's a specialty of mine — if you want to go deep on just that layer, see schema markup consulting. But AEO is the broader job: content, entities, structure, and outside corroboration all working together.

How I help

Strategy, audit, or done-with-you.

I come at AEO as a fourteen-year search practitioner, not a tool reseller. We start by finding out where AI currently mentions you, your competitors, and your category — then build a plan to close the gaps. That can be a one-time audit and roadmap, a strategy engagement, or hands-on implementation across your content, entities, and structured data. If AI tools are part of the plan, I'll point you to the ones worth paying for and the ones that aren't.
