Local SEO · Map pack & near-me search

Get found by the people down the road.

When someone nearby searches for what you do, you want to be in the three businesses Google shows on the map — not buried on page two. Local SEO is the work that puts you there: a dialed-in Google Business Profile, consistent listings, real reviews, and pages built for the way people actually search locally.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of getting your business found by people searching in your area — the “near me” queries, the maps results, and the searches Google answers with a local pack of three businesses and a map. It overlaps with regular SEO, but the signals are different: proximity, your Google Business Profile, consistent listings across the web, and reviews carry weight here that they don’t in a national search.

For a business that serves a city or a service area, this is usually where the highest-intent traffic is. Someone searching “emergency plumber near me” is ready to call, not browse. Show up in that map pack and the phone rings; stay off it and you’re invisible to the customers most likely to buy. If you’re new to it, start with the plain-English guide to local SEO.

The levers that move local

What actually gets you into the map pack.

Local ranking comes down to a handful of signals working together. Get these right, in this rough order, and you give yourself the best shot at the three-pack and the near-me searches.

How the map pack is decided

Proximity, relevance, and prominence.

Google ranks local results on three things, and understanding them tells you what you can and can’t control. Proximity is how close you are to the searcher — you can’t move your building, but you can make sure your address and service areas are set correctly so you show up for the right places. Relevance is how well your profile and website match what someone searched, which is where your categories, services, and local pages do the work. Prominence is how established and trusted you appear — driven by reviews, citations, links, and your overall web presence.

Most businesses that aren’t ranking are losing on relevance and prominence, not proximity. The profile is half-filled, the categories are wrong or too few, reviews have stalled, and the listings around the web disagree about the basic facts. Those are all fixable, and they’re usually the fastest wins available — which is why an honest look at how Maps ranking works almost always turns up money left on the table. The businesses that win locally aren’t doing one clever thing; they’re doing all of the basics completely, while their competitors do them halfway.

Who it's for

Storefronts, service areas, and multi-location.

If your customers are local, local SEO matters — whether you have a storefront people visit, a service-area business that goes to them, or several locations to keep straight. Each is a little different: a storefront leans on its profile and reviews, a service-area business needs the right area pages, and multi-location brands need a system so the locations don’t compete with each other or fall out of sync.

How I help

Audit, fix, and build the local foundation.

I start by finding out where you actually stand — how your profile is set up, where your listings disagree, what reviews look like, and who’s beating you in the pack and why. From there it’s a prioritized plan: fix the profile and the inconsistencies first, because they’re the fastest wins, then build the local pages and the review and link habits that compound over time.

What I won’t do is sell you a pile of thin city pages or a directory blast and call it strategy. Local is a long game of being genuinely the most relevant, established answer for your area, and I’d rather build that than chase a shortcut that gets you filtered. If you want a straight read on your local presence, a consultation is the place to start, and a full website audit can cover the local layer alongside the rest.
