Service schema markup (schema.org/Service) is structured data you use to describe a professional or commercial service offering on a page. Unlike product pages with clear SKUs and prices, service pages typically rely on prose — which is difficult for search engines and AI systems to parse with confidence. Adding Service markup gives machines a clean, structured summary: what the service is, who provides it, where it is available, and what the engagement looks like. It belongs on individual service pages, one block per service.
Service schema is worth understanding clearly before implementing it, because it works differently from types like Product or Article. It does not currently produce a standalone rich result in Google Search the way those types do. What it does is contribute to local search relevance, AI-powered answer retrieval, and the entity graph that connects your business to its specific offerings. As AI Overviews become the primary surface for informational and navigational queries, structured service descriptions become a more reliable way to have your offerings represented accurately in those answers.
What Service Schema Markup Does
The practical value of Service markup plays out in a few areas. For local service businesses, it reinforces the association between your organization entity and specific service types — which is a local search relevance signal when combined with Organization schema markup that includes a proper LocalBusiness type and areaServed. For national or remote service providers, it gives AI retrieval systems a clean structured description they can use when generating answers to queries like "who offers [service] in [context]."
There is also a practical reason to implement it now even before rich result support expands: structured data that is already in place when Google rolls out new rich result types for a schema type gets credit immediately. The Product schema history is instructive — sites with clean Product markup already in place benefited from rich result expansion before sites that scrambled to add it after the announcement.
Schema is not a direct ranking factor. Service markup helps machines understand the nature of your offering and who provides it — which feeds entity graph construction, local relevance scoring, and AI retrieval confidence, rather than directly moving keyword rankings.
Service Schema Properties: Required and Recommended
The Service type has a moderately large property set. These are the fields that matter for SEO and AI search use cases:
@type—Serviceor a more specific subtype; see belowname— the specific service name as it appears in the page heading; match it exactlyserviceType— a short descriptor of the category of service (e.g., "SEO Consulting", "Schema Markup Audit", "Web Design")provider— anOrganizationorPersonentity identifying who delivers the service; nesting a proper entity here is where most of the value comes fromareaServed— geographic scope; can be a place name string, aCountryobject, aStateobject, or an array for multiple regions; do not leave blank for remote servicesdescription— a concise summary that matches the visible page copy; keep it accurate to avoid a structured data mismatch flagoffers— anOfferobject; includepriceSpecificationonly if pricing is visible on the page; omit entirely if no pricing is shownurl— canonical URL of the service pagehasOfferCatalog— anOfferCatalogwith itemized sub-services; useful for agency pages with multiple service variants listed under one umbrellatermsOfService— URL to your terms; useful for professional services where compliance matters
Service Subtypes: When to Go More Specific
The generic Service type is often the right choice for professional consulting and agency services, but schema.org has subtypes that can add precision:
ProfessionalService— licensed professional services like accounting, legal, architecture, therapy; inherits fromLocalBusinessFinancialProduct— financial services, loans, insuranceGovernmentService— public services delivered by government bodiesCableOrSatelliteService,BroadcastService— media delivery services
For most SEO consultants, web designers, and marketing agencies, plain Service is the correct type. The subtypes under LocalBusiness (like ProfessionalService) bring in local search signals, which matters for location-based service providers but is less relevant for national or remote-first practices.
JSON-LD Example for Service Schema Markup
Place this in the <head> of each individual service page. The provider here nests a Person entity — for an agency page, replace it with an Organization entity with the same structure.

How to Add Service Schema in WordPress and Other Platforms
WordPress does not have built-in Service schema support, and most SEO plugins handle it inconsistently. Yoast SEO adds a generic WebPage type to all pages but does not output Service markup without a Local SEO add-on, which is primarily designed for LocalBusiness schemas rather than general service markup.
The cleanest approach for WordPress: a custom JSON-LD block added via a Code Snippets plugin or in functions.php, using is_page() to target specific service page slugs. This gives you complete control over the output and keeps the markup isolated to the pages it belongs on. For agencies managing multiple client service pages, I typically build a template function that accepts the service name, description, and serviceType as parameters.
For Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, and Shopify: use each platform's custom code injection to add the JSON-LD block to the page <head>. The guide on adding schema markup covers platform-specific approaches including WordPress plugins, manual JSON-LD, and Google Tag Manager as a fallback.
How to Test Service Schema Markup
Because Service schema does not produce a rich result preview in the Google Rich Results Test, testing focuses on validation rather than preview:
- Schema Markup Validator (validator.schema.org) — the primary tool; validates the full block against the schema.org vocabulary, catches type errors, and flags missing recommended properties
- Google Rich Results Test — run it anyway; even without a Service-specific rich result, it shows whether Google can parse the JSON-LD and will flag malformed structures
- Google Search Console — check Enhancements after the page is indexed; GSC will surface structured data warnings and errors for parsed types
A common silent error: provider linking to a Person or Organization entity that does not have its own schema block elsewhere on the site. Google can parse the nested entity inline, but cross-referencing to a defined entity via @id is a stronger signal. See the full guide on testing schema markup for a complete diagnostic checklist.
Service Schema and AI Search
AI Overviews and LLM-based retrieval increasingly use structured data to answer service-oriented queries. When someone asks an AI search tool "who provides schema markup consulting in the US" or "what does [company] offer for SEO," a clean Service block is a higher-confidence input for the model than parsed prose — it reduces ambiguity about what exactly the service is, who provides it, and where it is available.
The description property is especially relevant here. A well-written service description that matches the page copy gives AI systems a quotable, structured summary they can use directly in generated answers. This is meaningfully different from hoping the AI infers a description from your headline and introductory paragraph — structured data makes the claim explicit and machine-readable in a way that prose does not.
Common Service Schema Mistakes
- Adding pricing data in the
offersobject when no price appears on the page. The golden rule applies directly: only mark up what the user can see. Mismatched pricing can trigger a manual action for structured data misuse. - Using a single Service block to describe multiple distinct services on one page. Each service deserves its own page and its own schema block — combining them produces vague, low-confidence markup that is worse than none.
- Leaving
areaServedblank for remote or national services. Even specifying "United States" or using aCountryobject is more useful to a local search algorithm than omitting the field. - Copying a generic Service template without updating
serviceTypeanddescriptionto match the specific page. Mismatched markup is a structured data quality violation and can result in manual review. - Omitting the
providerproperty entirely. This severs the connection between the service entity and the organization or person delivering it, reducing the entity graph signal significantly.
Service schema pairs well with Organization schema markup when you nest a proper provider entity, and with rich snippets strategy when you add AggregateRating to service pages where you display reviews.
